SES was awarded the accolade of Best Health & Safety Initiative for its extremely successful ‘We’re Safer Together – Zero Harm’ initiative, at the recently held Electrical Contractors Association’s (ECA) annual awards.
SES’ North East office has made a significant contribution to the ‘We’re Safer Together – Zero Harm’ campaign, not least because of its excellent health and safety record but also because of the team’s creative approach which involved the production of a thought-provoking video based on Don Merrell’s safety poem by the same name ‘I Could Have Saved a Life That Day’.
Filmed on sites around the region by Rachel Schofield, an Assistant Planner with SES, the video encourages employees on site to challenge the behaviour of others, even those with many years’ experience when they can clearly see they are doing something which could cause an accident or worse, endanger life.
The video proved to be so powerful it has been adopted as part of SES’ national health and safety induction programme.
Speaking about the award, Steve Joyce, Business Director North and Scotland, SES said:
“Safety and wellbeing is an overriding priority for SES and I am delighted that the company has received this recognition. I’m also really pleased that staff in the North East have played a major part in that success, by taking it that one step further in producing the video.
“Often people don’t like to challenge their workmates or other site visitors in case they offend someone, particularly those who have worked in the industry for many years and are deemed to know better.
“Thanks to the positive approach SES takes to the health, safety and wellbeing of its employees they feel empowered to challenge and raise awareness when something is not quite right and that’s why we have such an exemplary Riddor-free track record.”
Tony Sidwell, Director of Safety Health & Environment, SES added:
“The health, safety and wellbeing of our people is of the upmost importance to our business and to be recognised by our industry is a great testimony to the hard work and dedication of our people.
“Winning the ECA Best Health & Safety Initiative of the Year award is recognition of that hard work and the professionalism and dedication of all of our electrical operatives, supervisors and engineers.”
