SES Engineering Services’ (SES) talented team has received further industry recognition with the recent announcements that two of its employees have been shortlisted in the forthcoming G4C Awards for the North West and North East regions.
In the North West, planning manager Steve Williams, who is based in SES’ Manchester office but works on major projects across the breadth of its Northern and Scotland region, has been shortlisted for the ‘Mentor of the Year’ accolade.
The self-taught planner who began his career as a pipefitter is responsible for single-handedly bringing about a sea change to the role of MEP planner within SES and building a high calibre team of planners from within the business.
In addition to working with the SES team of planners, Steve is noted for his mentoring skills across other disciplines throughout the business which supports operational improvements within the company’s wider context.
Furthermore, his commitment to sharing his knowledge and putting the subject of planning within building services on a more formal footing has seen Steve develop a comprehensive training programme which SES hopes to develop to a level where it can be externally accredited.
In the North East, trainee, Jack Emerson, whose attitude and approach, for one so young and inexperienced, made him stand out, has been shortlisted in the ‘Trade Apprentice of The Year’ category.
Since joining SES, Jack has continually exceeded expectations and is always willing to stretch himself to learn new techniques and continually develop his skills and confidence. He also possesses an astounding ability to absorb technically challenging operations and translate the information into an installation that matches the brief – which again is unusual amongst those working at his level.
Steve and Jack follow in the footsteps of Dean Callaghan who, earlier this year, received a Highly Commended in the ‘Trade Apprentice’ category in the recent G4C Yorkshire and Humber Awards. As an adult trainee Dean, 40 years old, stood apart from his fellow shortlisted candidates and was recognised for taking a leap of faith by changing direction in his thirties to become fully qualified.
Speaking about these latest shortlistings for his team, Steve Joyce, regional business director North and Scotland said:
“The G4C awards are growing in stature each year and it has been a pleasure to support them in 2020, by nominating SES employs who clearly reflect the ethos of the awards.
“Dean is the first of the team to have received recognition and I have every confidence that both Steve and Jack will gain recognition too.
“As a mentor, and by passing on his skills, enthusiasm and knowledge of planning to a growing number of people within our business, as well as associates we work with, Steve is putting training on a formal footing. This will be advantageous to the wider industry.
“Meanwhile, Jack who is starting out on his career within the MEP sector is a refreshing example of what today’s modern apprentices should aspire to, especially given his positive attitude and approach to his role.

Outside of the G4C Awards, in November 2019, it was the turn of Tom Cawthray to be acknowledged for his work in digital engineering when he was shortlisted in the annual CIBSE – Society of Digital Engineering Awards in the ‘Best Digital Engineer’ category. Tom, who is championing the use of digital technologies such as BIM and virtual reality, was joined in his category by engineers from around the world.
