SES Engineering Services (SES) was appointed as the Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) services provider for the development of the second phase of the Ronald Ross Building for the University of Liverpool.
The Ronald Ross Building Phase 2 (aka Apex Phase II) is home to the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Diseases & Translational Medicine as well as BioBank. The Institute specialises in researching the mechanisms of ageing and to find ways to delay its onset and to mitigate its effects.
The research within this state of the art laboratory examines musculoskeletal biology, optical sciences as well as examining functions like movement metabolism and sight.
The development comprises 13,900m2 of laboratory, write-up, office and support space across four accommodation floors with basement and rooftop plant space.
SES was commissioned to undertake the full design for providing M&E services including specialist laboratory gases, autoclave, warm & cold rooms to the new CL2 Bio-science laboratory and over 100 fume cupboards. As well as integrating the building within the University’s existing infrastructure and co-ordinating its interface with the existing Phase 1 building whilst maintaining its operation.
The co-ordination design utilised our in-house BIM facility to optimise service distribution within the congested plant spaces and ceiling voids enabling extensive use of offsite manufacture by our in-house modular production facility, Prism minimising installation periods and resulting in a programme period reduction of c. 10% through the removal of over 12,000 site labour hours. The use of offsite fabrication was critical to the success of this project, resulting in a project delivered to programme and budget.
