Working alongside the main contractor, who is acting on behalf of the Dixons City Academy Charitable Trust in conjunction with Bradford Education Services, SES has secured its place on the development of the Dixons McMillan Academy, Bradford.
SES will provide both the design and installation on a full range of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services as well as HVAC systems to deliver the 6,500 sqm project which will see the refurbishment and extension of an existing building on the former Bradford College site.
This transformative and ambitious project will create new teaching spaces and a sports hall as well as an innovative multi-use ‘heart space’ designed to enclose the existing semi-courtyard entrance area by providing a new glass frontage and entrance to the building.
Construction on the Academy is being carried out over two phases, with the first phase due to conclude in September prior to the start of the new academic year. Phase Two, which will create the ‘heart’ space, will conclude in November this year. The Academy will eventually have 720 pupils by the time it reaches its full capacity by 2020.
SES has worked with Interserve on a number of projects across both the education and commercial property sectors. The most recently completed scheme was a major phased extension of Corpus Christi Catholic College, delivered under the Leeds Building Schools for the Future initiative.
Adding his thoughts on the SES appointment, Andy Jones, Contracts Manager, Interserve said:
“With a trusted reputation for delivering many projects of this type we choose our project partners carefully. SES’ experience and depth of resource is extensive and it is this, coupled with their early involvement that gives me every confidence in their ability to ensure smooth progress through the two phases of construction.”
Steve Joyce, Business Director North and Scotland, SES also commented:
“I am delighted that Interserve has chosen to involve us in this ambitious Dixons McMillan Academy project. Our early involvement providing design and cost input ensured that the scheme was both affordable and would match the client’s expectations prior to commencing work.
“Further to this, by fully utilising our sophisticated BIM and Prism capability and adopting our ‘build before we build’ approach to create modular building services, we are delivering a fully packaged plantroom and fully integrated service modules, which allows us to deliver a significantly speedier installation. This will ensure we achieve the short time frames we are working to.”
The project, which has been funded by the Education Funding Agency, was procured via the YORbuild regional framework.
SES recently became the first Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Services contractor (MEP) to achieve BRE Accredited BIM Level 2 Certification, one month ahead of the government’s public sector project compliance deadline.
